On the death of Meinhard von Gerkan

In memoriam

Meinhard von Gerkan

When people talk about the revolutionary concept of the former Tegel Airport, about the drive-in airport of short distances, about its iconic architecture, about the famous hexagon – then this is inseparably linked to the person Meinhard von Gerkan. Even before he became one of Germany’s most famous architects, in 1965, together with Volkwin Marg and Klaus Nickels, he achieved the coup of submitting an airport design to the international architectural competition as fresh university graduates – and winning. They struck a chord with Tegel and made history. In 2019, the building ensemble was listed as a historic monument – an honour for Meinhard von Gerkan that is bestowed on truly few in his lifetime.

His building manifested his belief in the future. For us, Tegel Projekt GmbH, it is both a motivation and an obligation to create an Urban Tech Republic here that is just as great as the one Meinhard von Gerkan and his colleagues achieved back then. We were always assured of his support for this new chapter. Since 2009, his office gmp has been involved in the post-use planning for Tegel Airport, among other things with the vision of the Sustainable City TXL+. Meinhard von Gerkan passed away on 30 November 2022. We remember him and say thank you. We express our sincere condolences to his family and friends as well as to the employees of gmp.
